Aid and abet

Love is the ultimate outlaw.
It just won’t adhere to any rules.
The most any of us can do
is to sign on as its accomplice.
Instead of vowing to honor and obey,
maybe we should swear to aid and abet.
That would mean that security is out of the question.
The words ‘make’ and ‘stay’ become inappropriate.
My love for you has no strings attached.
I love you for free.

Good point

The actor Brad Pitt wore a linen skirt
    to the German premiere of the film Bullet Train in July.

When asked about it by Variety reporter Marc Malkin, he said,

    “I don’t know! We’re all going to die, so let’s mess it up.”

Because

There are no "becauses" in reality.
    There are becauses in your story.
        Your story is glued together by "x because y."

Where does because live? It's what I said.
    Human beings live in a conversation.
        The conversation you are committed to is because.

Michael Collins 16 October 1890 – 22 August 1922

How could a born soldier die better than at the victorious end of a good fight,
falling to the shot of another Irishman - a damned fool,
but all the same an Irishman who thought he was fighting for Ireland . . .
I met Michael for the first and last time on Saturday last, and am very glad I did.
I rejoice in his memory, and will not be so disloyal as to snivel over his valiant death.
So treat up your mourning and hang up your brightest colours in his honour;
let us all praise God that he did not die in a snuffy bed of a trumpery cough,
weakened by age, and saddened by the disappointments
that would have attended his work had he lived.

Convergence

If prayer stands as the place where God and human beings meet,
    then I must learn about prayer.
Most of my struggles in the Christian life
    circle around the same two themes:
        why God doesn't act the way we want God to,
            and why I don't act the way God wants me to.
Prayer is the precise point where those themes converge.

Nothing like it

At some ideas you stand perplexed,
    especially at the sight of human sins,
        uncertain whether to combat it by force or by human love.

Always decide, "I will combat it with human love."

If you make up your mind about that once and for all,
    you can conquer the whole world.

Loving humility is a terrible force;
    it is the strongest of all things
        and there is nothing like it.

Failing

At least if you're failing, you know you're alive;
    you're participating, engaged, learning,
        and therefore contributing to evolution.
The Japanese have a phrase for this,
    they call it "the nobility of failure," implying,
        "Look at all the great things at which this person failed.
                She was really alive."
